How to Filter your Gmail Inbox

Gmail automatically filters you emails and decides which email go to your personal inbox. This is your main inbox which you don't want flooded with annoying emails. There is the SPAM box where Google puts emails they assume you don't want. Then there are the promotions, updates, forums and social inboxes which Google thinks you will check from time to time when you're not busy.

Google tries to get it right but they don't always. You can manually filter specific email addresses that you would like to block or place into a specific inbox.

In this example I want emails from airlines that usually go to promotions to go directly to my personal inbox. This is because I don't always check my promo inbox. I don't want to miss out on the last minute deals that the airlines offer. This is useful for snap sales, especially around Christmas. 

There might also be a blog that you're particularly interested and would like their Newletters to go straight your inbox. It also prevents emails that you want to receive being marked as SPAM by Google.

You can type in a specific address name@DomainYouWantToFilter.com. Alternatively, if you want to filter all addresses from a domain just type @DomainYouWantToFilter.com. You can also filter for specific expressions (eg. Black Friday Sale) and email size.

Simply type in the email address and categorize as"personal". Click "create filter" and you're done!
